Sounds of Clay
~Adam Sutton

My studio is located in the middle of the Manistee national forest, in northern Michigan.
I've been interested in ceramics for some years now. I've taken ceramics through junior and high school,
at Goshen college, in Goshen Indiana, and ceramic classes at Westshore community college.
I've been making Djembes and Doumbek hand-drums for over10 years now.
A blend of my ceramic education and traditional African drum building, I've come up with
a professional quality sounding djembe drum with the characteristics of fine pottery.
I enjoy many forms of artistic expression,
the majority of which are illustration, multi-media sculpting, chainsaw carving, and pottery.
While my artistic interests are varied, I spend the majority of my time creating functional pottery,
from mugs and tea pots, to bird feeders and ceramic instruments. I have been interested in
African and middle eastern percussion instruments for many years. Some of my favorite forms
include Djembes, Udus, Doumbeks, Ashikos and Maracas and I have molded my own designs
after these forms, incorporating characteristics of different instruments to create a truly unique
work of musical art.
Every ceramic item is made individually, no reproductions or assembly line, all Sounds of Clay
pottery is a unique one of a kind piece.Due to their superior sound quality, I use African goat hides,
that are individually hand dyed.
